How Hubert Rainer is leading the Achenkirch recycling center into the future
Achenkirch digital recycling center was opened at the beginning of 2025 and can do more than just provide containers. It thinks for itself. Helps to detect waste. Opens barriers. And makes it easier for people to separate their recyclables. One person who keeps an eye on all of this is Hubert Rainer. Formerly a recycling center manager - now a digital operator.
“I never thought my job would look like this,” says Rainer. Instead of having discussions with citizens about mixed waste, drop-off quantities or opening hours, he now manages the entire operation via a centralized system. He can see what is being dumped where via camera. Can intervene in a targeted manner. And track who has brought what and when to ensure recycling quality. In the event of incorrect disposal, he intervenes and draws the customer's attention to his behavior. In the worst case, he could withdraw access authorization, but this is not necessary in practice, as citizens are quick to show understanding when they are caught digitally and traceably.
Clear processes instead of disputes
What used to be valued by employees is now weighed to the kilo and invoiced digitally. The new technology creates clarity and prevents conflicts. "We no longer have to estimate or arbitrate. What is displayed digitally is paid for. In the past, we often gave in to our customers for the sake of peace. We want a good atmosphere at the recycling center and we also see each other in the village." For Rainer, this means fewer emotional arguments and more focus on the business.
Efficiency that pays off
The effect is clear to see: in the first three months after opening there was a big increase in recycables. A clear sign that digital systems not only create order but also make economic sense.
6 days week for green waste
An additional pilot project is already underway: the green waste area is accessible from monday to saturday from 9AM-7PM - with consistently positive feedback. "This is a huge relief for working people in particular. And because everything is monitored, it also works smoothly," says Rainer.
Digitalization as a career change
The digital transformation has not only changed the recycling centre, but also Rainer's role. From an employee on site, he has become a digital operator who controls, documents and evaluates. "I don't have less to do, but I work differently and more efficiently. That's a pleasure."
Achenkirch shows: Digitalization is not an end in itself, but a tool. When used correctly, it creates a place that works for everyone. For employees, for citizens, for the environment.
