On November 7, 2024, sensis+wiegon was one of the 41 winners of the prestigious “GreenEconomy.IN.NRW” funding competition organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MUNV). With its innovative “Recycling center of the future” project, the competence cluster made an important contribution to the ecological transformation in North Rhine-Westphalia.

With its solution for the modern recycling centre, sensis+wiegon sets new standards in the digitalization of waste management and shows how recycling processes can be made more efficient and user-friendly. The award-winning project is based on a concept that was developed in close cooperation with the Tyrolean company wiegon. The digital recycling center, which is already successfully in use in over 30 municipalities in Tyrol, enables fully automated handling of all waste-related processes. From licence plate recognition at the entrance, self-service terminals and a citizen app to central monitoring via a control centre - digitalization ensures optimized control of customer flows and a significant reduction in the workload for employees.

“We are delighted that our project won an award as part of the GreenEconomy.IN.NRW competition. The digitalization of the recycling centre shows that modern technologies not only benefit citizens, but also companies and waste management employees. This is a decisive step on the way to a sustainable circular economy,” said Margit Klinken, shareholder of sensis GmbH, at the award ceremony.

The NRW award scientifically underlines the character of the sensis+wiegon competence cluster concept and confirms that the digital solution can also be implemented in other cities and municipalities. The project thus contributes to the state's environmental economy strategy, which is funded by the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MUNV). The strategy aims to support innovative and sustainable projects in order to further strengthen the digital circular economy in the state.
