The project was already presented in VKS News 291 in the article “Flexible and digital: The recycling center of the future.” We are therefore all the more pleased that ZAKB is now also featured in VKU Information 114 – Artificial Intelligence in Use as an innovative practical example for waste management.

The article in brief:
From 2026, the ZAKB will rely on digital solutions and AI to make the recycling center more efficient, flexible, and customer-friendly. Users can register and train themselves independently via a portal. They can control all processes at the recycling center and make payments via an app. Access is automatic via license plate recognition, reducing waiting times and allowing recyclables to be disposed of autonomously outside of opening hours. The operator monitors operations 24/7 via an external control center, can communicate with users, and control all parts of the facility.

AI helps to calculate waste flows in real time, predict container requirements, and reduce the workload on staff. The pilot project in Bürstadt is providing important experience for transferring the concept to other ZAKB locations in the coming years.

Digitalization and AI are thus improving service, optimizing processes, and modernizing waste management in a sustainable manner.
